Fast Trades, Big Dreams

Fast Trades, Big Dreams

The energy was electric as Junior Achievement of South Florida welcomed high school students from Broward County and South Palm Beach County to this year’s Stock Market Challenge –an unforgettable, fast-paced experience where learning meets adrenaline.

Over the course of three action-packed days, students stepped into a high-speed trading floor where every minute mirrored a full day on Wall Street. The room buzzed with excitement as teams scrambled to track breaking news, analyze market trends, and make split-second decisions. Volunteers moved swiftly through the crowd collecting trades, while the ringing bell signaled the opening of each trading round – sending waves of anticipation across the room.

Armed with $500,000 in imitation currency, students built their initial portfolios from more than 25 fictitious companies before diving into the competition. But success wasn’t just about quick thinking -it was about collaboration, strategy, and a deep understanding of how the market works. Teams leaned on one another, debated decisions, and adapted in real time as the market shifted around them.

The result? An immersive, high-energy learning experience that brought financial literacy in the classroom to life in a way no textbook ever could. And the competition was fierce. One standout team rose to the top, finishing with an impressive portfolio valued at over $758,000.

Beyond the numbers, the Stock Market Challenge is about building confidence, sharpening critical thinking skills, and giving students a glimpse into real-world financial decision-making. It’s where future investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders begin to see what’s possible.

A special thank you to our Title Sponsor, Fifth Third Bank, and our Presenting Sponsor, Space Coast Credit Union, for helping make this impactful experience possible for our students.

Disney Cruise Line Hosts Career Bound Students

Disney Cruise Line Hosts Career Bound Students
by: Laurie Sallarulo
CEO and President of Junior Achievement of South Florida

Students often learn best when they can connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences — and that’s exactly what happened when Junior Achievement of South Florida Career Bound students from Dillard High School and Atlantic Technical College partnered with Port Everglades and Disney Cruise Line for an immersive career exploration experience.

Through this collaboration, students gained firsthand insight into the diverse career pathways within the port, hospitality, and tourism industries — sectors that play a critical role in South Florida’s economy. Beyond learning about job titles, students explored how large-scale operations function, what skills employers value most, and how different roles work together to create seamless guest experiences.

As part of the program, students are also participating in a real-world business case challenge focused on hospitality and tourism. This hands-on project allows them to research industry trends, analyze business needs, and develop solutions, helping them build problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills that are essential for future careers. Experiences like these bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness, giving students the confidence to envision themselves in professional environments.

This opportunity was made possible through the leadership and support of the Port Everglades team, including Port Communications Manager Helen Boyer, Port Director Joseph Morris, and External Affairs and Marketing Director Ellen Kennedy, whose commitment to community engagement helped bring the experience to life. Students also benefited from the knowledge shared by career panelists Krystal Permanan, Senior Business Development Manager for the Foreign Trade Zone; Nicholas Vandenheiligenberg, Assistant Director of Business Development at Port Everglades; and Dayron Rodriguez, Port Operations Manager at Disney Cruise Line, who provided valuable perspectives on career pathways and industry expectations.

To make the experience even more memorable, students were invited by Jose Corpus and the Disney team to become the very first group to tour Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Destiny. From the Superheroes vs. Villains theme to a behind-the-scenes look at ship operations, the visit brought classroom learning to life in a powerful way. For many students, stepping onto the ship transformed what once felt like distant career possibilities into tangible goals.

Experiences like this do more than introduce students to industries — they expand horizons, build confidence, and create motivation. By connecting young people with industry leaders and real-world environments, partnerships like these help shape career aspirations and open doors to opportunities that can influence students’ futures for years to come.

Workforce Insight: AI Skills Essential for Today’s Workforce

Workforce Insight:

AI Skills Essential for Today’s Workforce

Artificial intelligence is no longer a skill for the future. It’s changing the way we work, reshaping jobs and redefining the workforce right now. Companies expect candidates to know how to use AI tools effectively.

Across industries, AI capability is becoming one of the fastest-growing skills employers are looking for. Companies are no longer asking if candidates understand AI. They’re asking how well they use it.

What’s Changing

AI is not simply eliminating jobs – it’s reshaping them.

  • Routine tasks are automated.
  • Productivity expectations are increasing.
  • Human strengths like judgment, creativity, communication and ethical decision-making are more valuable.

The advantage will belong to workers who can combine AI fluency with strong human skills.

A Question for Employers

Are you intentionally evaluating AI proficiency in your hiring process?

Forward-looking companies are beginning to:

  • Ask candidates how they use AI tools in daily workflow.
  • Question how they rely on AI?
  • Assess how they verify accuracy and mitigate bias.
  • Look for adaptability and learning agility, not just familiarity with one platform.

AI proficiency is no longer about coding expertise. It’s about application, discernment and strategic thinking.

Preparation Must Start Before the Interview

If employers expect AI readiness in their talent, students must have opportunities to develop it.

Many education systems are still working to figure out how to integrate AI meaningfully into curriculum. That gap is where partnerships with organizations who focus on workforce development matter most.

At Junior Achievement, AI is being integrated into high school workforce, pre-apprenticeship and entrepreneurship programs through:

  • Case challenges
  • Resume development
  • Business planning simulations
  • Work-readiness

Today’s students will need AI literacy to be employable tomorrow. Students need to know not just how to use AI, but to question it, validate it and pair it with critical thinking.

When workforce non-profit organizations, school districts and employers align around evolving skill demands, we do more than prepare students for jobs, we strengthen the competitiveness of our entire regional economy.

The future of work is already here. Preparing for it begins long before the interview.

JA Worldwide Leader Writes Book to Support Mission

Modern Achievement reveals the innovative new framework that young leaders need to succeed in our rapidly-changing modern reality.

Today’s aspiring leaders are redefining achievement. They understand achievement as a process for individual empowerment—discovering who they are and how they want to change themselves and the world around them. That world is more global, decentralized, dynamic, and diverse than ever before. Rather than just setting goals for achievement, today’s graduates are focusing on the process of achieving goals, resetting and pivoting to face new realities, and finding happiness in the journey.

Classic books on achievement like those by Napoleon Hill, Brian Tracy, and Stephen Covey were written for a much different world. Today’s young leaders need a fresh approach for achieving success in their lives and careers. Enter Asheesh Advani and Marshall Goldsmith.

In Modern Achievement, JA (Junior Achievement) Worldwide CEO Asheesh Advani and celebrated leadership expert Marshall Goldsmith (What Got You Here Won’t Get You There) offer thirty actionable lessons for personal and career success. Each lesson is part of an innovative Fixed-Flexible-Freestyle leadership framework that helped Advani to lead JA Worldwide and propel the organization to annual recognition as one of the top 10 NGOs in the world.

Using vivid storytelling from the lives of Advani and Goldsmith as well as established leaders and young achievers they have met, Modern Achievement empowers emerging leaders to claim their individual power to grow, achieve, and lead others.

This book supports JAs mission. It goes on sale August 14th.
Net proceeds from book sales will be donated to Junior Achievement.

JA Celebrates 65th Anniversary Empowering 1.3 Million Youth

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF SOUTH FLORIDA CELEBRATES ITS 65TH YEAR EMPOWERING 1.3 MILLION YOUTH

Events will take place throughout the last half of 2024 and all of 2025, beginning with a Celebration for JA’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program Graduates on July 26

Broward County, FL — Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA) will celebrate its 65th anniversary throughout the 2024- 2025 fiscal year. The nonprofit, which partners with Broward County Schools, has served more than 1.3 million students since its inception on Aug. 10, 1959, and annually serves more than 80,000 K-12+ students in 10 established programs. In its 65 years in operation, JA has stayed true to its mission to empower young people and give them the tools they need to succeed in the real world.

The first event to commemorate the organization’s 65th anniversary will be a graduation celebration for the students who successfully completed JA’s Pre-Apprenticeship program. This empowering program helps high school seniors and young adults pursue professional careers in the marine and construction fields. Participants undergo a 6-month training program, which sets them up to earn any of five industry-recognized certifications, fast-track life-changing careers and earn $600 in milestone incentives. The program then matches students with top employers in the industries and launches them into registered apprenticeship careers.

The Pre-Apprenticeship Graduation Celebration will take place on July 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion (1130 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek, FL 33066).

The second anniversary event will be a Celebration of Impact Breakfast, on Oct. 17 from 8 to 10 a.m. (also taking place at JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion). Kicking off the new school year, the event gathers community business leaders, legislative advocates, Broward County Public School officials and other key stakeholders, who are committed to JA’s mission. The celebration will honor community trailblazers and feature ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new storefronts opening in JA BizTown and JA Career Discovery Park two simulated cities that teach critical skills in financial literacy, learn about career paths and gain the knowledge they need to join the workforce.

All of JA’s 65-year anniversary events will pay homage to the organization’s history. JA USA, JA’s parent organization, began in 1919 when founder Horace Moses, Theodore Vail, then President of AT&T, and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts Murray Crane, set the foundation for a global movement to bridge the gap between education and practical business skills Their vision was to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. In 1959 the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale partnered with JA USA to launch a local branch. In 2009, JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion, the largest single JA center in the nation, was opened on the north campus of Broward College.

Teen Entrepreneurs Secure FedEx 2024 Global Possibilities Award

Junior Achievement Of South Florida Teen Entrepreneurs Secure 2024 Global Possibilities Award Presented by FedEx

FedEx Acknowledges Innovative Business Plan Driving Job Creation and Environmental Sustainability

WASHINGTON DC — During Junior Achievement’s (JA) National Student Leadership Summit (NSLS), held from June 10-13, NSU University School SugarWare earned the 2024 Global Possibilities Award, presented by FedEx. Evaluated by a panel of FedEx jurors, the student company showcased an exceptional business strategy to foster employment opportunities while supporting environmental sustainability.

To qualify for the Global Possibilities Award, presented by FedEx, a Junior Achievement student company needed to be among the finalist teams competing at Junior Achievement’s NSLS. These talented teen entrepreneurs participated in additional sessions focused on the concept and impact of global connectivity, a program developed by FedEx that complements the JA Company Program®. The award recognized the JA student company that devised a marketing plan for a product or service showcasing a comprehensive understanding of global connectivity.

“FedEx was founded with one essential purpose: to connect people and possibilities around the world. We believe a connected world is a better world. With the strength of our global network and logistics expertise, we help our customers – from small business owners to Fortune 500 companies – compete more effectively in the global marketplace,” said Ann-Marie McIntosh, vice president of global brand at FedEx. “The FedEx Global Possibilities platform celebrates the power of global connectivity and the next generation of innovators. The Global Possibilities Award recognizes a student-run business that best exhibits the four principles of global connectivity: Driven by Innovation, Connecting to New Markets, Fueling Community Development, and Sustainability and Social Responsibility.”

The SugarWare journey began with a simple yet powerful idea—to combat CO2 emissions by harnessing the potential of sugarcane. The founders of SugarWare, all students at NSU University School, united with the common goal of creating products that are not only functional and stylish but also environmentally responsible. It’s not just a project; it’s a commitment to shaping a brighter, greener future. Learn more at https://sugarware.co/.

“Attending the Junior Achievement Nationals Student Leadership Seminar was an exhilarating experience, especially when we received the FedEx Global Possibilities Award. Winning this prestigious award was a testament to SugarWares commitment to sustainability and innovation. Our mission to reduce CO2 emissions aligns perfectly with FedEx’s environmental goals. This recognition inspires us to continue our journey towards a more sustainable world,” said Bari Eisenband, SugarWare CEO.

JA Company Program® is an immersive learning experience that empowers high school students to establish and operate authentic business ventures under the guidance of committed mentors from the local business community. Fueled by their passion, the teenage entrepreneurs identified an unmet consumer need, successfully garnered investors for their venture, and adeptly crafted and marketed their innovative product or service.

“SugarWare embraced the concept of global connectivity as a catalyst for industry transformation, market expansion, and sustainable growth,” said Laurie Sallarulo, President & CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida. “By harnessing the opportunities presented by global interconnectedness, these young visionaries can pioneer innovative solutions that transcend geographical boundaries, spur economic development, and effect positive change on a global scale.”

Junior Achievement’s National Student Leadership Summit serves as a platform to honor the remarkable business acumen, creativity, and innovation demonstrated by JA Company Program students aged 15-18 throughout the 2023-2024 academic year. The JA Company Program affords teens the invaluable opportunity to launch and manage their own enterprises under the guidance of local business volunteers.

Throughout the three-day event, student-led companies competed for various accolades, participated in engaging virtual seminars led by national experts in innovation, entrepreneurship, and business, and virtually presented their enterprises to a distinguished panel of judges comprising esteemed business leaders.

JA Joins Nationwide Pre-Apprenticeship Week Celebration

In line with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ workforce education goals, Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA) has expanded its pre-apprenticeship training programs. Graduating participants will publicly announce their career path selections at a declaration celebration on May 31.

COCONUT CREEK, FL — The declaration celebration is being hosted in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Labor nationwide Youth Apprenticeship Week (YAW), which takes place May 5-11, with events throughout the month of May.

JA’s pre-apprenticeship program offers students an alternative to college by providing them the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and work for local companies in the marine and construction industries.

There has been a recent resurgence of pre-apprenticeship opportunities both nationally and statewide as educators, politicians and entrepreneurs fight to give young people new pathways for success. Taking on costly student loans to attend universities is out of reach for many young Americans; pre-apprenticeships offer a proven method to advance students to well-paying careers.

Hiring pre-apprentices is a win-win scenario for both the students, who enter the program at no cost, and to industry employers, who are struggling to fill vacancies in their workforces caused by the “silver tsunami” of retiring workers.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recognized the importance of pre-apprenticeship opportunities when in 2019 he publicly set a goal of making Florida the number one state in the nation for workforce education by 2030. He then passed the 2021 Reimagining Education and Career Help (REACH 2.0) Act to increase pre-apprenticeship opportunities across the state.

JA currently offers six pre-apprenticeship pathways including: yacht service technician, marine technician, electrician, plumbing, roofing and HVAC, with additional career tracks in broadband/telecommunications and water waste operations coming soon. Students can earn tuition-free certifications in Mercury Technician Essential Knowledge (M-TEK), OSHA 10 (Maritime and Construction), CPR/first aid, forklift operation and Florida Boating Safety Care. They also can earn $600 in milestone incentives.

The success stories from this program are remarkable. For example, Ryan Rosas, a graduate of the program, came to JA as a product of the foster care system and a ward of the state. He had few options for his future. At the time he was working three different jobs just to stay afloat. Now he is working for DeAngelo Marine Exhaust, making more than he had made at all three of his previous jobs combined.

“The program allowed him to establish his independence and sidestep the pitfalls that a lot of students from the foster care system hit, where when they age out, they disappear into the abyss,” said Felix Collazo, JA’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program Director. “The program was life-changing for him.”¬¬

Media professionals are invited to attend the Declaration Celebration on May 31. Opportunities to interview students and industry professionals participating in the pre-apprenticeship program are available at any time. Please contact Senior Marketing Manager Christopher Miller at Ch*********@************da.org or (954) 979-7110 to arrange.
