JA BizTown

This engaging, hands on program introduces 5th graders to economic concepts, workplace skills, and personal and business finances in a simulated city created for young students.

JA BizTown Inspiring Their Career Paths Fueling Their Fascination! Empowering Their Future!

Every 5th grade student participates in a series of lessons, where they learn about applying for jobs, voting, career opportunities, customer service, paychecks, savings and more. Then, they put their knowledge to work at JA BizTown, where they operate a simulated economy and run businesses. Students get hands-on experience at being citizens, consumers, employees and business owners.

Each year, more than 21,000 fifth grade students in Broward and South Palm Beach Counties visit Junior Achievement of South Florida’s JA BizTown. JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion houses two identical JA BizTowns. Both the Dave and Lorraine Thomas JA BizTown and the Falcone Family JA BizTown have 18 public and private storefronts, all sponsored by real local businesses, that help brings the town to life for the students.

This year, while our students cannot be in our facility, we have brought the JA BizTown experience to the digital world!  The virtual JA BizTown Program is accessible online and flexible for in-class or remote learning.  The program supports critical thinking skills and student engagement and helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school, via in-classroom or remote learning, and the real world.

JA BizTown Virtual Curriculum Highlights

  • JA BizTown virtual curriculum is an online learning experience that students can access whether remote, face-to-face or in a hybrid learning environment.
  • Sessions engage students in narrated, interactive screencasts, videos, and fillable PDF activities.
  • Curriculum can easily be implemented as a teacher led option or a student self-driven option.
  • Educators introduce the curriculum assignments to students, schedule check-in points and provide opportunity for student reflection and discussion.
  • Modules average five to ten minutes in length.

JA BizTown Online Adventures Highlights

  • Online, self-guided experience that students can access inside or outside the classroom, following completion of the JA BizTown curriculum.
  • Students will gain an understanding of various aspects of running a business as they take on five roles of chief executive officer, chief financial officer, marketing director, sales manager, and consumer.
  • Each role takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
  • Students may replay any adventure at any time.
  • The businesses represented reflect the local community and may include financial institutions, retail, media, city hall, and more.
