JA World Uncorked – one of South Florida’s favorite culinary events – started just over 10 years ago. Back in 2009, a group of 10 women joined together to create a fundraiser for Junior Achievement of South Florida’s educational programs. That group of 10 women is now the Circle of Wise Women and has grown to more than 100 strong.

From learning the ropes of supply chain management to studying the latest in big data, Geomani Brooks was not a typical high school graduate. His evening routine of researching companies likewise showed exceptional rigor for his age.

But such are the interests and habits Brooks developed during his two years in Junior Achievement of South Florida, as a junior and senior at South Broward High School. From there, he earned a 2018 summer internship at City Furniture, whose president, Andrew Koenig, is a JA board member.

“I was shadowing the global logistics team for two months,” recalls Brooks, who will enter his sophomore year at Broward College in the fall. “Each day , I would shadow a different person, and learn how they do things as individuals and as a team. It was amazing, how much went into sourcing fabrics; they were very aware of where they got products from and child labor laws. That was one of the first questions I asked them.”

WPLG Local 10: Junior Achievement Hosts Career Day for South Florida Students

Dillard High School students present school safety invention

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Students from Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale presented their own school safety invention Friday as we near one year since the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

The South Florida students are among those going one-on-one with industry professionals in hopes of getting a jump start at their future careers.

“To learn early and learn well is a recipe for success,” David Greenberg of Junior Achievement, said.

A total of 2,000 students from schools across South Florida got up close and personal with what could be their future career.

“Today, there’s about 40 exhibitors here from different industries talking about the jobs and things they can do,” Junior Achievement CEO Laurie Sallarulo said.

From local first responders to technology-based businesses, the program focuses on landing students with internships and training others to have skills to score a job.

“It is clear that they are clearly engaged. Someone came by and said to me, ‘Wow, these kids are really listening and are intense on what they are showing them,'” Sallaraulo said.

“It’s a really good experience to meet new businesses and new opportunities I’ve never knew of,” student Anthony McCaloa said.

While some students focused on exploring different fields, a group from Dillard High School presented their own invention called a DHSP Safe Block — an innovative tool to keep students and teachers safe during a threat.

“Me meeting with these people who are telling me what they’ve done, where they’ve been and how they’ve came to be helped me very much,” student Narrisa Noel said.

Junior Achievement officials said next time they are looking to do the career day over the course of two days instead of one as they continue to prepare the next generation of workers.

How Junior Achievement of South Florida Empowers the Future’s Workforce

Eight years ago, student Stefano Selorio began his professional journey, thanks to Junior Achievement of South Florida. It started when he was in the fifth grade and participated in JA BizTown program, which teaches youths how to run companies through hands-on role playing and handle their personal finances. BizTown resembles an indoor business hub with real companies, including BB&T, Lifestyle Media Group and Hoffman’s Chocolates.

“We owned little storefronts, and I was the CEO of Sports World,” Selorio says. “I was in charge of making paychecks, depositing them and hiring people.”

In the eighth grade, he participated in JA’s Finance Park program. He took on the character of a single father with three children, and he learned how to manage a household budget. JA has a partnership with Broward County Public Schools that requires fifth and eighth graders to attend these programs.

In 11th and 12th grades, he did the JA Fellows program twice and learned how to create, build and develop a small company along with a team of roughly 15 to 20 students. The 8-month program is led by business mentors and culminates with a “Spark Tank,” where students present business pitches to investors. “We had advisers from JA, entrepreneurs and CEOs who came out and helped us with how to take products to market,” he says.

Annual Light Up The Night Raises Funds And Awareness For Junior Achievement of South Florida

City of Coconut Creek, Florida—Junior Achievement of South Florida raised more than $30,000 at its recent 5th Annual Light Up The Night event held on Tuesday, March 13, at Casa de Montecristo by Prime Cigar in Boca Raton, FL.

Three outstanding couples were honored this year for their support to Junior Achievement. They were Ryan and Merideth Leeds, Mark and Sharon Warren, Steve Nudelberg and Michelle Esposito.

“It is a passion for both Michelle and myself to work with the kids Junior Achievement serves. They inspire to be entrepreneurs and are eager to learn. When you get to do what you love with the people you love, that’s what I call success,” Nudelberg said.

The evening also featured: food provided by Rapoport’s Restaurant Group (Henry’s, Deck 84, Burt & Max’s and Prezzo); fashion by Gent Row, Beyond Proper by Boston Proper and Kendra Scott; exotic autos from Excell Auto Group; music; and networking.
